This 1942 film follows Rick Blaine, an expatriate night club owner, in Casablanca Morocco who runs into his former lover, Ilsa Lund, and her husband, freedom fighter Victor Laszlo, who are trying to flee war torn Europe. Rick has the power to get them both out of Casablanca and to America, but is more than reluctant to help Ilsa, the woman who broke his heart. Casablanca is often considered one of the greatest films of all time, so it is no question why it is included on our movie list. The film is now and always has been a critical darling, it has a 100 Metascore on Metacritic.com. The cast is filled to the brim with great acting talents of the era from Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in the starring roles to Sydney Greenstreet and Claude Rains in the wonderful supporting ensemble, naming only a few of the great talents in this film. At the 16th Academy Awards the film won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay and was nominated for 5 additional awards. The film’s impact can be felt today in almost any film from the largest summer blockbusters to the smaller auteur films and is included in many lists of great cinema.
